Balby is a suburb of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, located approximately 2 miles southeast of the town centre. The area has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. In the 19th century, Balby became a centre for coal mining and brickmaking, with many of the local residents employed in these industries. Today, Balby is a diverse community with a mix of residential and commercial areas.
One of the most notable landmarks in Balby is St Catherine's Hospital, a former psychiatric hospital that was in operation from 1878 until 2018. The hospital was known for its innovative treatments and was one of the first in the country to use electroconvulsive therapy. Today, the site is being redeveloped into a mix of residential and commercial properties, with plans for a new community centre and green spaces.
Balby is also home to a number of schools, including Balby Central Primary School and Balby Carr Community Academy. The area has a strong sense of community, with local events such as the Balby Big Lunch bringing residents together. Balby is well-connected to the rest of Doncaster, with regular bus services and easy access to the A1(M) motorway.
