The village of Bessels Leigh has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. It was originally known as Besselsleigh and was owned by the Bessels family until the 16th century. The village was then passed on to the Earl of Abingdon and remained in his family until the 20th century. Today, the village is home to a number of historic buildings including the 12th century St Lawrence Church and the 17th century Besselsleigh Manor.

Despite its small size, Bessels Leigh has a strong sense of community and is home to a number of local events throughout the year. The village hall hosts regular events including a monthly farmers market and a popular annual fete.
