Welcome to Scrooby

Scrooby is a small village located in the county of Nottinghamshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles north of the town of Bawtry and 8 miles east of Retford. The village has a rich history dating back to the 11th century when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Scrooby was once an important market town and a centre for the wool trade. Today, it is a quiet and peaceful village with a population of around 300 people.

One of the most significant events in Scrooby's history was the formation of the Separatist Church in the early 17th century. The Separatists were a group of religious dissenters who believed that the Church of England was corrupt and in need of reform. They met secretly in Scrooby Manor, the home of William Brewster, one of their leaders. In 1608, they attempted to flee to Holland to escape persecution, but were caught and imprisoned. Eventually, they were able to make their way to Holland and later to America, where they founded the Plymouth Colony.

Scrooby is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the 12th century St. Wilfrid's Church and Scrooby Manor, which dates back to the 14th century. The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. The nearby River Idle is a popular spot for fishing and boating. Scrooby is a charming village with a rich history and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a great place to visit or call home.
