Scrooby is a small village located in the county of Nottinghamshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles north of the town of Bawtry and 8 miles east of Retford. The village has a rich history dating back to the 11th century when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Scrooby was once an important market town and a centre for the wool trade. One of the most significant events in Scrooby's history was the formation of the Separatist Church in the early 17th century. The Separatists were a group of religious dissenters who believed that the Church of England was corrupt and in need of reform. They met secretly in Scrooby Manor, the home of William Brewster, one of their leaders. In 1608, they attempted to flee to Holland to escape persecution, but were caught and imprisoned. Eventually, they were able to make their way to Holland and later to America, where they founded the Plymouth Colony.
