The village has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was known as Spelbroc. One of the most notable features of Spellbrook is its beautiful church, St. James the Great. The church dates back to the 13th century and is a Grade II listed building. It is a stunning example of medieval architecture and features a beautiful stained glass window that was installed in the 19th century. The church is still in use today and is a popular destination for visitors to the village.

Another attraction in Spellbrook is the Spellbrook Lock on the River Stort. The lock is part of the Stort Navigation, a canal that runs from Bishop's Stortford to the River Lea. The lock is a popular spot for boaters and walkers alike, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. There is also a pub nearby, The Crown, which is a great place to stop for a drink or a bite to eat after a long walk along the canal.

This Is A Lovely Walk, It's Very Open Although There Are Some Wooded Areas. I Have Never Seen It Crowded Even On A Warm Summer Sunday. Some Of It Is Cow Field So For Those Parts It's Best To Have Your Dog On A Lead Although There Are No Signs Up Urging You To Do This. If You Want To Walk Further You Can Follow The River Stort For Miles, (A Number Of Pubs On Route). Within The Actual Park There Are Some Rolling Hills So I'm Not Sure About Wheel Chair Access. There Is A Railway Track Which Is Not Fenced Off Across The River And Along The Far Edge Of The Park, But You Don't Really Have To Go Anywhere Near This. Park In The Moor Hen Pub Car Park. Walk In The Direction Of The Pub And Just Keep Going, Or Stop At The Pub First! It's Approximately A Four Mile Round Trip If You Only Walk To The Next Pub, The Harlow Mill. Once You Reach The Harlow Mill Cross Over The Road Bridge And Make Your Way Back. You Can Walk Further, The River Has A Path Along Side For Miles Or You Can Cut It Shorter, There Are Several Pedestrian Bridges. If You Want To Veer Away From The River There Are Public Foot Paths But Be Aware They End Up Coming Out Onto A Road, Usually Without Pavement.
