Welcome to Englefield

Englefield Berkshire is a picturesque village located in the heart of the English countryside, just a few miles west of Reading. This charming village is steeped in history and boasts a rich heritage that dates back to the Roman era. The name Englefield is derived from the Old English word "Englafelda," which means "the open land of the Angles." The village is nestled amidst lush green fields, rolling hills, and ancient woodlands, making it an idyllic destination for those seeking a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

One of the most striking features of Englefield Berkshire is its stunning architecture, which is a testament to the village's long and storied past. The centerpiece of the village is the magnificent Englefield House, a grand Elizabethan mansion that has been the ancestral home of the Benyon family for over three centuries. The house is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and parkland, which are open to the public and provide a serene setting for leisurely strolls and picnics. In addition to Englefield House, the village is also home to several other historic buildings, including the charming St. Mark's Church, which dates back to the 12th century and features a striking Norman doorway and a beautiful stained-glass window designed by the renowned artist Edward Burne-Jones.

Englefield Berkshire is not only a haven for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts, but it also offers a wide range of recreational activities for visitors to enjoy. The village is surrounded by miles of scenic footpaths and bridleways, making it a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. The nearby Englefield Estate also offers a variety of outdoor pursuits, including clay pigeon shooting, fishing, and deer stalking. For those who prefer more leisurely pursuits, the village boasts a thriving community with a range of clubs and societies, including a gardening club, a history society, and a local choir. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and plethora of recreational activities, Englefield Berkshire truly offers something for everyone.
