Welcome to Colthrop

Colthrop, a small hamlet located in the county of Berkshire, England, is a picturesque and serene destination that offers a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of the region. Nestled along the banks of the River Kennet, Colthrop is situated just a few miles from the bustling market town of Thatcham, providing a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. With its charming cottages, lush greenery, and tranquil atmosphere, Colthrop is a hidden gem that showcases the quintessential charm of the English countryside.

The history of Colthrop dates back to the medieval period, with records indicating that the hamlet was once part of the larger manor of Thatcham. Over the centuries, Colthrop has seen various changes in ownership and development, with its most notable period of growth occurring during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, the hamlet became a hub for the local paper industry, with several mills established along the River Kennet to take advantage of the water power. The Colthrop Paper Mill, which was in operation until the late 20th century, played a significant role in the local economy and provided employment for many residents. Today, the remnants of the mill serve as a reminder of the hamlet's industrial past and its connection to the wider history of papermaking in Berkshire.

In addition to its historical significance, Colthrop is also a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding countryside offers a variety of walking and cycling routes, allowing visitors to explore the picturesque landscape and enjoy the fresh air. The River Kennet, which flows through the heart of the hamlet, is a popular spot for fishing and birdwatching, with a diverse array of wildlife to be found along its banks. Furthermore, Colthrop's proximity to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ensures that there is no shortage of breathtaking scenery and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Local Dog Walks

Canal Towpath Newbury
This Path Follows The Kennet &Amp; Avon Canal. I Started At The Discovery Centre Just Outside Newbury On The Road To Thatcham Where You Will Find Free Parking And A Cafe. There Is A Dirt Track That Crosses Over The Railway Track Taking You Down To The Canal. My Dog Loved It, Although Being A Cockapoo He Did Spend A Lot Of Time Trying To Get Into The Canal. It’S A Relaxing Route Which Is Level.
