Welcome to Bucklebury

Bucklebury, Berkshire, is a picturesque village steeped in history and charm, nestled in the heart of the English countryside. Located approximately 10 miles to the east of Newbury and 12 miles to the west of Reading, this quaint settlement is surrounded by lush woodlands, rolling hills, and fertile farmland. The village is part of the civil parish of Bucklebury, which also includes the hamlets of Marlston, Upper Bucklebury, and Bucklebury Common. With its rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and strong sense of community, Bucklebury is a quintessential example of rural England at its finest.

The history of Bucklebury dates back to the Roman era, with archaeological evidence suggesting that the area was inhabited as early as the 1st century AD. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is referred to as "Borgeldeberie." Over the centuries, Bucklebury has been shaped by various historical events and influences, including the Norman Conquest, the English Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution. The village boasts several listed buildings and structures, such as the 12th-century St. Mary the Virgin Church, the 16th-century Old Rectory, and the 17th-century Bucklebury House. These architectural gems provide a fascinating insight into the village's past and showcase the evolution of English design and craftsmanship.

In addition to its historical allure, Bucklebury offers a wealth of recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. The village is surrounded by an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways, providing ample opportunities for walking, horse riding, and cycling. The nearby Bucklebury Common, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Furthermore, the River Pang, which meanders through the village, offers a tranquil setting for fishing and picnicking. With its idyllic rural setting and strong sense of community, Bucklebury provides a peaceful haven for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

This Path Follows The Kennet &Amp; Avon Canal. I Started At The Discovery Centre Just Outside Newbury On The Road To Thatcham Where You Will Find Free Parking And A Cafe. There Is A Dirt Track That Crosses Over The Railway Track Taking You Down To The Canal. My Dog Loved It, Although Being A Cockapoo He Did Spend A Lot Of Time Trying To Get Into The Canal. It’S A Relaxing Route Which Is Level.
